Those concerned said that after the death of former mayor Shaukat Hossain Hiran, the elder son of district Awami League president Abul Hasnat Abdullah, Sadiq Abdullah took the reins of Awami League in Barisal and gained absolute dominance. The general secretary of the party got the post, the city mayor was elected.

However, Sadiq has not been given party nomination in the upcoming BCC (Barisal city corporation) elections.
